Magnesium reduces the risk of colon and pancreatic cancers in ...

(NaturalNews) The role of magnesium in cancer is quickly gaining interest among researchers because of recent studies showing protective effects against multiple cancers. The most recent studies have shown that every additional 100 mg of magnesium daily may reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by 12 percent, and of pancreatic cancer by 21 percent. The latest study on colon cancer was carried out in two portions, each using dietary questionnaires to assess participants' daily magnesium intakes. The first was a case-control study on over 1,500 people (768 cases and 709 control subjects), which showed that every extra 100 mg of daily magnesium intake led to a 19 percent risk reduction in colorectal adenomas. However, this result was only statistically significant for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or greater, or for those at least 55 years old, or for the case of advanced adenomas. This is still highly relevant to Americans of all ages; however, since the average American adult's BMI is 28.4 for both men and women.

The second part of the study was a meta-analysis which combined the data of several past similar studies with the above new study, and this showed the protective effects of magnesium to be even more impressive. For the general population, every additional 100 mg/day of magnesium reduced the risk of colorectal adenomas by 13 percent, and reduced the risk of colorectal cancer by 12 percent. Importantly, the data showed both cases to be linear relationships, which means greater intakes of magnesium are assumed to offer proportionally higher levels of protection.

The most recent study on magnesium for pancreatic cancer was the EPIC Cohort from Europe, which included 142,203 men and 334,999 women with an average 11.3 year follow-up. Stratified analysis showed that every 100 mg/day increase in dietary magnesium reduced the risk of pancreatic cancer by 21 percent for those with a BMI of 25 or greater. Importantly, these results closely echoed the outcome of an earlier study from the UK (done on men only), which showed that men with the highest magnesium intakes (423 mg/day) had a 33 percent lower risk of pancreatic cancer than those with the lowest levels (281 mg/day). Again, this risk reduction was only valid and statistically significant for men with a BMI of 25 or greater. A 14 percent risk reduction was seen for the general male population (highest to lowest quintile of magnesium intakes) but the effect was not statistically significant. It shouldn't be surprising that magnesium plays a role in cancer. It takes part as a co-factor in over 300 enzyme systems and is found in every tissue of the human body. And relevant for cancer, it plays a critical function in DNA repair, cell differentiation, proliferation and angiogenesis. Magnesium deficiency has also been linked directly to inflammation and oxidative stress, and now, to increased cancer risk. Unfortunately, 79 percent of American adults don't get enough in their diets (the current RDA is 320 mg/day for women and 420 mg/day for men).Magnesium supplementation is an easy way to obtain the RDA, but eating magnesium-rich foods is a healthier way to get there, because they often contain other beneficial factors which also fight cancer. An exhaustive list of magnesium-rich foods (from the USDA nutrient database) is available at the last link below. Note that magnesium deficiency is more likely in seniors, heavy drinkers, and those with hyperglycemia, gluten sensitivity, and Crohn's disease.

Gamer plays 'Black Ops 2' for 135 hours, sets world record

The 'Nintendo Wii U' is a great device now, but it might not hold up over time. NBCNews.com's Todd Kenreck reviews the device. Play video

4 hrs.

What does playing "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" for 135 hours looks like??As you can see from the photo above it looks ... not so good.

But hey, that's the price for setting?a world record ... right? Right?

Okan Kaya of Sydney, Australia,?spent the last seven days setting a new record for the longest marathon first-person shooter gaming session.?He spent 135 hours and 50 minutes playing the new?"Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" game.

His employer???computer cable company?4Cabling???has been documenting his progress on its website and?its?Facebook page. On?Tuesday,?his co-workers announced that Kaya, a sales manager, had not only set the record but had finished with a "Black Ops 2" career?ranking of 29th among some 5 million players.

"It took 7 DAYS of mental & physical stamina & he crushed it!" his co-workers wrote on Facebook.

I checked in with the?Guinness World Records office, which confirmed that?Kaya did register his plans to make a run for the record.?"While no Guinness World Records adjudicator was on site to verify, we await for Okan to send across all the necessary and required evidence across to in order for our records team to properly authenticate," a Guinness spokesperson said.

If everything looks good to the folks at Guinness, Kaya will have beaten the record?previously held by Canadians Chris Gloyd and Timothy Bell, who played "Resistance" and "Resistance 2"?for?120 hours and?7 minutes in March 2012.

Meanwhile, let's be thankful that Kaya is?still alive to enjoy his new title. After all, other gamers haven't been so lucky after marathon play sessions. A 20-year-old gamer from England died from a pulmonary embolism?after a lengthy gaming session. And a teen gamer in Taiwan died after a "Diablo 3" binge.

But it seems Kaya tackled at least some of the risks to his circulatory system by?occasionally?using a Stair Master while he was playing.

It?seems?that difficult task should warrant some kind of a world record of its own: World record for longest time spent gaming while walking in place perhaps??

Thanksgiving And Eating Disorders: How Our Biggest Feast Can Be ...

Thanksgiving is a time of feasting and family; outsized in not only i's portions, but in its expectations of familial harmony. And while it's a holiday to celebrate the bounty of our blessings, for many -- particularly disordered eaters -- it can be a stressful reminder of psychological and behavioral patterns that are hard to break under the best of circumstances.

"People need to be mindful that holidays are an evocative, associative time because they are such particular days," says Geneen Roth, author of Lost and Found and Women Food and God. "And so it becomes easy to say things like, 'Last Thanksgiving, things were better.' For example, if you?re not in a relationship and you really want to be and you once were, then unfortunately, what can happen is that your mind can start in on you -- you can build an unhappy story about the holidays that can lead you to eat. We tend to build stories and the stories we build often lead to feelings that lead to eating."

"Freudians would say that people who eat compulsively are literally swallowing their problems -- they're reverting to the earliest, simplest stages of gratification: putting things in their mouths," says Andrew Getzfeld, PhD, an adjunct professor of psychology who specializes in eating disorders at New York University.

Conversely, for restrictive eaters, the sudden lack of control -- either because of the change in environment or a reversion to old family dynamics -- can cause relapsed behavior. "Part of the problem is that the holiday revolves around family, but to me these disorders are family disorders -- they start with and affect families," explains Getzfeld.

But just because the holidays can be challenging for those in recovery or in the throes of disordered eating doesn't mean that there aren't coping mechanisms. Organizations like The Center for Eating Disorders at Sheppard Pratt offer tips on how to make the most of a trying situation. They emphasize sticking with treatment like therapy appointments and journaling and also having a friend or two to call when you're feeling low.

Roth also recommends this thought exercise: what?s the best, kindest thing for you to do right now?

"People often confuse self-kindness with self-indulgence: that huge piece of pie is an indulgence, it's numbing -- it's not a kindness. Particularly if you know you?ll feel a little sick after you eat it," she explains. "Kindness is not just spineless and mushy. It's also awareness and resolve to follow through."

Getzfeld additionally recommends reminding yourself that the difficult situation you find yourself in is finite: "Take one day at a time, remember that it's a time-limited situation, and if for some reason you have relapse, it?s not the end of the world -- it?s situation specific and it doesn?t undo the work you?ve done."

That's echoed in the sentiment of Laura Collins Lyster-Mensh, who last year advised eating disorder survivors to remind themselves that the holiday comes just once a year.

So what should you do if you suspect a loved one is in crisis? Warning signs can be difficult to identify, as Getzfeld points out, because while anorexics may be visibly not eating at the table, bulimics can be in crisis without detection, as they might eat a typical amount with company around and then later binge and purge once everyone's out of the house or asleep.

"The best thing you can do is be sensitive to people?s needs, talk to them and don't take it personally," says Getzfeld.

San Diego panda cub is a 'little gift' (+video)

One hundred days after his birth, the San Diego Zoo's youngest panda received his name. Researchers say that due to the panda breeding program, the species survival seems more likely. ?

There is a new little gift at the San Diego Zoo that's going to get very big.

The zoo's youngest giant?panda?was officially named Xiao Liwu, Chinese for "little gift," at a ceremony Tuesday. He is on the small side, but is strong and cooperative, said Dr. Ron Swaisgood, a member of the zoo's?panda?team.

The cub was born on July 29 and was named 100 days after its birth, according to Chinese zoo tradition. Officials said the cub weighs 9.2 pounds (4 kilograms) and stretches more than 23 inches (58 centimeters) long from nose to tail.

Zoo officials got 7,000 suggested names, chose their top six and put them up for a vote. More than 35,000 zoo visitors voted on names that meant Little Gift, Miracle, Raindrop, Big Ocean or Big Sea, Brave Son and Water Dragon.

Xiao Liwu's mother is Bai Yun which means White Cloud and father Gao Gao, which means Tall Tall. The cub is Bai Yun's sixth. She turned 21 in July, making her the oldest giant?panda?known to give birth.

Through participation in a?panda?exchange breeding program with China, researchers "have gone from zero to 100 overnight in understanding the species," Swaisgood said. That's very beneficial for conservation because "it's hard to conserve what we do not understand."

He called the?panda?the world's "best loved species."

Before the program, the future of the species was bleak, he said, because the death rate exceeded the birth rate. But in 2010, "we met the 200 individuals needed to preserve the genetic diversity of the species," Swaisgood said to applause from the audience.

Swaisgood described efforts by scientists in China to track wild?pandas. A wild?panda?will leave about 50 droppings a day, he said, and scientists can learn a lot from that, including information about DNA, hormones and diet.

Swaisgood said those taking part in the breeding program have done a good job.

"There is a feeling of hope that things are turning around for the species and it has a brighter future than it did 20 years ago," he said.
