The implications of the new route, described online March 18 in Nature Chemistry, aren?t clear. But scientists are certain that they?ve never seen it before.

?This paper is interesting and important because hydrogen bonding is so ubiquitous and involved in so many things,? says electrophysiologist Tom DeCoursey of Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Proton transfer is crucial for many processes in biology, such as photosynthesis, DeCoursey notes. ?But I don?t see a direct tie-in with biological systems,? he says of the new research. ?Where this might actually take place is another thing.?

Hydrogen atoms often exist without electrons, in which case, chemists refer to them as hydrogen ions, or just as protons. These protons get passed around a lot during chemical reactions, and scientists thought there was basically one way to do this: via a hydrogen bond. Hydrogen bonds, in which a positively charged proton feels the tug of a negatively charged atom, are everywhere in nature, holding together molecules such as water and DNA. These bonds allow one molecule to gain a proton and another to lose one during chemical reactions.

?For the proton, the hydrogen bond is like riding on a track that?s going between two molecules,? says chemist Anna Krylov of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She and her colleagues have prompted protons to transfer between stacked, ring-shaped molecules that had no hydrogen bonds between them. Calculations suggest that the ringed molecules rearrange themselves, creating an alternate short path that the proton can travel. ?The molecules help it find its way,? says Krylov.

Japan logs surprise trade surplus

Japan logged a surprise trade surplus of ?32.9 billion (US$394 million) last month, offering a glimmer of hope for its moribund economy, but economists warned that with oil prices heading higher the outlook remained uncertain.

The export-led boost reversed a monster deficit of ?1.48 trillion in January, largely thanks to a recovering auto industry and signs that the US? economy is picking up, even though the European market remains weak.

Last month?s trade surplus, the first in five months, was still dwarfed by the surplus of ?636.99 billion posted in the same period a year ago.

?It was quite a surprise,? said Taro Saito, a senior economist at Tokyo-based NLI Research Institute. ?It was not expected that the decrease in exports would shrink this much.?

One of the largest contributing factors was ?the US economy, which is picking up much faster than expected,? Saito said, adding, however, that he expects Japan?s trade balance to fall back into the red this month.

Auto exports to the US rose 26.9 percent from a year earlier while sales of steel and construction and mining machinery also expanded, the official data showed.

?The auto industry is recovering quickly and doing well also in the domestic market. The upbeat US economy is helping the increase in exports of cars,? Saito said.

Overall Japan?s exports fell 2.7 percent from a year earlier to ?5.44 trillion last month on weaker demand for products including steel, medical products and semiconductors, finance ministry data showed.

Imports increased 9.2 percent to ?5.41 trillion for the month on strong demand for crude oil and liquid natural gas, marking the 26th consecutive month of gains in imports.

Yasuo Yamamoto, senior economist at Mizuho Research Institute, said trade figures in March may dip back into the red on rising crude oil prices.

?The figures are likely to hover between small deficits and surpluses for the time being,? he said.

The number of foreign tourists hit a record 62 million last year, up 4 percent from 2010, the department said in a statement.

Foreign visitors spent a record $153 billion in 2011 on U.S. travel and tourism-related goods and services, up from more than $130 billion the year before, the statement said.

Canada was by far the largest source of foreign visitors at 21 million, followed by Mexico at 13.4 million. Britain was in the third spot at almost 4 million.

"We will do everything we can to boost this industry so that we can keep growing our economy and creating more jobs," Commerce Secretary John Bryson said in the statement.

The Commerce Department said the large number of foreign tourists made travel and tourism the number one service export.

The department did not give a reason for the rise in foreign visitors.

Tourism spending by domestic and international visitors combined rose 8.1 percent last year to $1.2 trillion.

President Barack Obama said in January he was taking measures to boost U.S. travel and tourism. Bryson will make promoting U.S. tourism an element of his trade mission to India next week, the statement said.

Exclusive: Watson close to $7 billion Actavis drug deal: sources

LONDON/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc is close to buying Swiss-based Actavis for around $7 billion, marking the latest deal between generics companies racing to achieve economies of scale, three sources familiar with the matter said.

The deal would involve U.S.-based Watson, already among the world's five largest generic drugmakers, paying between 5.0 billion and 5.5 billion euros ($6.6-7.3 billion) for Actavis, a business not much smaller than its own, the sources said.

After rapid expansion in the early 2000s, Actavis underwent a leveraged buyout in 2007 by Icelandic tycoon Bjorgolfur Thor Bjorgolfsson, which ultimately left Deutsche Bank holding billions of euros of its debt.

It has since been seen as a target for either an eventual initial public offering or a trade sale. Its strong presence in central and eastern Europe fits with Watson's desire to expand in these particular emerging markets.

Spokesmen at Watson, Actavis and Deutsche Bank declined to comment on Wednesday.

Targeting Actavis is a bold move for Watson, whose previous acquisitions include the $1.75 billion purchase of Arrow Group in 2009, which established a foothold for the company in Europe, and the $1.9 billion purchase of Andrx Corp in 2006.

The purchase of Actavis would be far larger but could be made to work since there would be scope for significant synergies, including the possible closure of some manufacturing capacity in the United States.

The generics sector has seen a wave of M&A in recent years because Western governments are putting pressure on the industry to provide drugs at the lowest possible price, which favors large players who can produce at low costs.

Watson further expanded its European presence last year when it bought Greece-based Specifar Pharmaceuticals for $562 million.

EARNINGS BOOST

One source said synergies in year two from buying Actavis could reach around 200 million euros, assuming the closure of the Swiss firm's plant in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and rationalization of global drug development portfolios.

Watson has a reputation for making acquisitions work and shares in the company rose 6 percent following the Reuters report, as investors anticipated a deal that would boost earnings.

Morningstar analyst Michael Waterhouse said Watson has lacked the international presence of larger rivals Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd , the Sandoz generics unit of Novartis AG , and Mylan Inc .

"If Watson wants to be competitive with those bigger players, it's probably a move in the right direction," Waterhouse said.

Gabelli & Co analyst Kevin Kedra noted Watson had talked about a "transformational deal" and buying Actavis would fit the bill.

"It's a consolidating industry and it's an industry that is basically winding down to just a few Goliaths and most of the Davids are getting scooped up," Kedra said.

Watson already enjoys a good working knowledge of Actavis - which used to be based in Iceland but moved its headquarters to Zug, Switzerland in 2011 - since a former chief executive of the group now works for the U.S. company.

Sigurdur Oli Olafsson joined Watson as head of global generics in September 2010, with responsibility for expanding sales and marketing outside the United States. Many analysts have been expecting the U.S. company to strike more deals, since it has more flexibility to take on debt than rivals Mylan and Teva.

Watson Chief Executive Officer Paul Bisaro said last month he was interested in acquisitions that would boost its generics business or its branded-drugs business, which focuses on women's health and urology.

Asked on the company's earnings conference call about indications he was eyeing a big branded acquisition, he said: "I've also made it very clear that if the right generic-focused large transaction presented itself, it would help us expand our footprint globally and drive additional growth through our generics business, we would do that one as well."

DEUTSCHE BANK EXIT

Watson, with a market capitalization of around $7.5 billion, had sales last year of $4.6 billion. Revenue was fuelled in the last quarter by generic versions of Pfizer Inc's Lipitor cholesterol treatment.

Meanwhile, Actavis CEO Claudio Albrecht told Reuters at the end of last year that his company's sales were expected to hit 2.1 billion euros in 2012, up from 1.75 billion in 2010.

Chris Schott, an analyst at J.P. Morgan, said he saw few antitrust hurdles to completing the deal as the companies' European businesses have little overlap, and overlap with the U.S. businesses appeared manageable.

Watson ranked as the world's fifth-biggest generic drugmaker by sales, while Actavis stood at 15th, according to recent data from IMS Health. Watson would move up to fourth, ahead of Sanofi SA , with Actavis in the fold.

The sale of Actavis would mark the end of a tricky episode for Deutsche Bank, which took an impairment charge of 407 million euros on its stake in the company in the fourth quarter of 2011.

The German bank has total senior debt in Actavis of around 3.5 billion euros, according to two sources, alongside smaller debt holdings by Icelandic banks and others.

In what may be a watershed moment for in-home entertainment, both Kansas and Missouri have given Google permission to provide video services to Kansas City residents as a part of its Google Fiber project. Missouri's Public Service Commision gave Big G the thumbs up on March 1st, and Kansas' Corporation Commission followed suit last Friday, meaning Google now has the green light to provide video services to residents on either side of the state line. Of course, the folks in Mountain View haven't committed to taking down the cable companies just yet, but these approvals put the necessary franchise licensing in place for them to do so if they choose. Comcast, Cox, Time Warner... your newest competitor has arrived.

Wagume, the woman pictured here, belongs to the?Kosua tribe, which lives on the eastern flank of Mt. Bosavi in Papua New Guinea. The little-visited area earned some attention in?a BBC nature documentary series, "Lost land of the?volcano."

Blake Everson told TODAY.com that he reached Wagume's village, Seane, after a three-day hike through rugged jungle.

Everson has been traveling?in Papua New Guinea for several years, even starting his own travel organization.

"The reason this area has become an intense interest of mine is due to its vulnerability to the multiple extractive?industries?that have taken notice of the abundant resources that the Kosua are traditional landowners of," he said.
