Taking Charge Of Senior Living Accommodations ? Caregiver ...

Before your children are faced with the decision of ?where will Mom and Dad live when they can no longer remain at home? you can begin looking into housing options. When faced with retirement and aging, seniors should be taking an active role in making a determination on where they will spend their Golden Years. After all, you?ve worked hard for decades and now is the time to decide whether you want to remain in the family home, travel the country, or even decide where you would like to live out your Golden Years ? an ocean front assisted living space, an independent living facility that overlooks a golf course, or any number of other choices.

Once you?ve retired you may be faced with the question of, ?What?s next?? Rather than being frozen in place when looking into the future, you should take time and make a list of what it is you want to do that perhaps you never had time to do while pursuing your career and raising your family. Has golf always been a passion? Do you enjoy sitting on a deck overlooking the water? Is the idea of living in a small town that you?d visited on vacation appeal as a long term solution? Chances are, regardless of your passions and hobbies, you can find an assisted living or independent living facility to suit your needs.

If you?ve made a decision to sell the family home and move to an independent living facility you may want to decide whether you?re moving closer to a particular family member or somewhere that is far from all your children. There will come a time when you will need to rely on family, especially as you age. Meanwhile, equipping your home with a home medical alarm system, is a great solution that can even move with you an assisted living facility. Having access to your medical alert device, even in an assisted living setting, provides an additional layer of protection and peace of mind.

Tell your children that you?re making a move because you simply don?t want to keep up with home maintenance and the higher utility bills that come with home ownership. Let them know where you?re considering moving and get their buy in on your decision. Chances are they will embrace your decision as it frees them from having to make tough choices on your behalf in later years.

The money you make from the sale of your home and the downsizing of your personal belongings can certainly be used to finance your new lifestyle in an independent living facility or assisted living community. If you?re healthy, energetic, physically active and mentally sharp, moving into one of these communities will provide outlets for socialization while allowing you the freedom of independence in your own apartment-type setting.

?Retirement living? has taken on an entirely new meaning in recent years as the aging population continues to remain active and are taking a more active role in their care as they age. Begin your search by determining what area of the country you?d like to live in then narrow down the search by looking at the amenities offered by the various locations. Spend time visiting these facilities ? think of it as a mini-vacation ? before making any life-altering decisions.

Chances are you will find that while amenities vary from facility to facility, most independent living communities cater to seniors looking for an active lifestyle and will provide recreational opportunities and access to sports such as golf or swimming. If you?ve always had a love of cooking or crafting or painting, look for an independent living community that caters to those hobbies as well.

The camaraderie you find at an independent living community can go a long way in making your Golden Years shine. By being active and involved you will be working to enhance both your physical and mental health and remain capable of aging in place for decades to come.

Vice President Biden campaigns in South Florida

Vice President Joe Biden campaigned for re-election in South Florida Saturday.

He appeared at the Wa-Ke Hatchee Park Recreation Center near Ft. Myers.

About 2,000 people attended the free event.

Mr. Biden discussed the Obama administration's stance on Medicare and tax cuts.

He also took aim at his opponents, GOP Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney and Vice Presidential Nominee Paul Ryan.

"What's even more amazing watching their convention is that they discovered the middle class," he said.

"It's like, 'My God, there's a middle class!," said Biden.

Before the rally, the Vice President shook hands and met with people at Mel's Diner.

President Barack Obama and the former Massachusetts Governor both took a day off from the campaign trail.

They debate Oct. 3 at the University of Denver.

At U.N., Muslim world questions Western freedom of speech

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Muslim leaders were in unison at the United Nations this week arguing that the West was hiding behind its defense of freedom of speech and ignoring cultural sensitivities in the aftermath of anti-Islam slurs that have raised fears of a widening East-West cultural divide.

A video made in California depicting the Prophet Mohammad as a fool sparked the storming of U.S. and other Western embassies in many Islamic countries and a deadly suicide bombing in Afghanistan this month. The crisis deepened when a French magazine published caricatures of the Prophet.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said it was time to put an end to the protection of Islamophobia masquerading as the freedom to speak freely.

"Unfortunately, Islamophobia has also become a new form of racism like anti-Semitism. It can no longer be tolerated under the guise of freedom of expression. Freedom does not mean anarchy," he told the 193-nation U.N. General Assembly on Friday.

Egypt's newly elected Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, voiced similar sentiments in his speech on Wednesday.

"Egypt respects freedom of expression, freedom of expression that is not used to incite hatred against anyone," he said. "We expect from others, as they expect from us, that they respect our cultural specifics and religious references, and not impose concepts or cultures that are unacceptable to us."

Mursi was one of the first leaders to be democratically elected after Arab Spring revolutions that led to changes in the governments of Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Yemen last year.

Western states that backed the uprisings have urged these countries to quickly foster democratic reforms and adhere stringently to human rights principles and basic freedoms.

They fear a more austere version of Islam could hijack the protest movements. Most Western speakers at the United Nation defended freedom of speech, but shied away from calls by Muslim leaders for an international ban on blasphemy.

While repeating his condemnations of the video, U.S. President Barack Obama staunchly defended free speech, riling some of those leaders.

"The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech - the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy," Obama said in a 30-minute speech dominated by this theme.

'CLASH OF CIVILIZATIONS'

Speaking after Obama, President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan, where more than a dozen people were killed in protests against the anti-Islam film, demanded insults to religion be criminalized.

"The international community must not become silent observers and should criminalize such acts that destroy the peace of the world and endanger world security by misusing freedom of expression," he said.

Highlighting the anger of some, about 150 protesters demanded "justice" and chanted "there is no god but Allah" outside the U.N. building on Thursday. One placard read: "Blaspheming my Prophet must be made a crime at the U.N."

Foreign ministers from the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation met on Friday. The film topped the agenda.

"This incident demonstrates the serious consequences of abusing the principle of freedom of expression on one side and the freedom of demonstration on the other side," OIC Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu told reporters.

Human Rights First and Muslim Public Affairs Council, two U.S.-based advocacy groups, warned of the risks of regulating such freedoms.

"Countless incidents show that when governments or religious movements seek to punish offences in the name of combating religious bigotry, violence then ensues and real violations of human rights are perpetrated against targeted individuals," they said in a joint statement.

The 47-member U.N. Human Rights Council, dominated by developing states, has passed non-binding resolutions against defamation of religion for over a decade. Similar ones were endorsed in the U.N. General Assembly.

European countries, the United States and several Latin American nations in the council opposed the resolutions, arguing that while individual people have human rights, religions do not, and that existing U.N. pacts - if enforced - were sufficient to curb incitement to hatred and violence.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle attempted to dampen talk of a clash of civilizations on Thursday.

"Some would have us believe that the burning embassy buildings are proof of a clash of civilizations," Westerwelle said in his U.N. address. "We must not allow ourselves to be deluded by such arguments. This is not a clash of civilizations. It is a clash within civilizations. It is also a struggle for the soul of the movement for change in the Arab world."

Mars rover Curiosity finds signs of ancient stream

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The NASA rover Curiosity has beamed back pictures of bedrock that suggest a fast-moving stream, possibly waist-deep, once flowed on Mars ? a find that the mission's chief scientist called exciting.

There have been previous signs that water existed on the red planet long ago, but the images released Thursday showing pebbles rounded off, likely by water, offered the most convincing evidence so far of an ancient streambed.

There was "a vigorous flow on the surface of Mars," said chief scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology. "We're really excited about this."

The discovery did not come as a complete surprise. NASA decided to plunk Curiosity down inside Gale Crater near the Martian equator because photos from space hinted that the spot possessed a watery past. The six-wheeled rover safely landed Aug. 5 after a nail-biting plunge through the Martian atmosphere. It's on a two-year, $2.5 billion mission to study whether the Martian environment could have been favorable for microbial life.

Present day Mars is a frozen desert with no hint of water on its radiation-scarred surface, but geological studies of rocks by previous missions suggest the planet was warmer and wetter once upon a time.

The latest evidence came from photos that Curiosity took revealing rounded pebbles and gravel ? a sign that the rocks were transported long distances by water and smoothed out.

The size of the rocks ? ranging from a sand grain to a golf ball ? indicates that they could not have been carried by wind, said mission scientist Rebecca Williams of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz.

Though Curiosity did not use its high-tech instruments to drill into the rocks or analyze their chemical makeup, Grotzinger said scientists were sure that water played a role based on just studying the pictures.

It's unclear how long the water persisted on the surface, but it easily could have lasted "thousands to millions of years," said mission scientist Bill Dietrich of the University of California, Berkeley.

Curiosity chanced upon the dried-up streambed while driving to Glenelg, an intriguing spot where three types of terrain meet. Its ultimate destination is Mount Sharp, a mountain rising from the center of crater floor, but it was not expected to travel there until the end of the year.

Finding past water is a first step toward learning whether the environment could have supported microbes. Scientists generally agree that besides water and an energy source such as the sun, organic carbon is a necessary prerequisite for life.

While an ancient streambed holds promise as a potentially habitable environment, scientists don't think it's a good place to preserve the carbon building blocks of life. That's why the rover will continue its trek to the foothills of Mount Sharp where there's a better chance of finding organics.

UK services output bounces back in July

LONDON (Reuters) - British services sector firms grew at their fastest pace in over a year in July as activity recovered after a public holiday hit business in June, official data showed on Friday.

Services output rose by 1.1 percent in July, the biggest gain since May 2011, after a 1.5 percent drop in June, the Office for National Statistics said. Output was 0.7 percent higher than a year earlier.

The services sector makes up more than three quarters of British GDP, and Friday's data suggests the economy made a strong start to the third quarter, after contracting by 0.4 percent in the second quarter of the year.

July's month-on-month rebound adds to strong growth in manufacturing, making it likely that the economy will leave recession after three quarters of contraction.

The bulk of ticket sales for the London Olympics will be booked in August, when the majority of events took place, though some are included in July's figures.

The ONS also reported that output per hour across all sectors of the economy fell 0.9 percent in the second quarter, contributing to a 2.6 percent fall in productivity over the previous year. Unit wage costs rose 2.0 percent on the quarter, while unit labour costs edged up by 0.3 percent, the statistics agency said.

Britain's weak productivity since the financial crisis has been a major puzzle for the Bank of England, and potentially poses inflation risks when the economy recovers.

The ONS also said that following new international guidance, it was reclassifying the remainder of banks Northern Rock and Bradford & Bingley owned by the government as central government bodies rather than public sector corporations, as they were no longer actively trading.

This means that they will add to general gross government debt, with knock-on impacts on the key measure of public sector net debt targeted by Britain's government, back-dated to 2010.

The ONS said the changes would push up government gross debt by 53.4 billion pounds in 2010/11, reducing to a 37.4 billion pound increase in 2011/12.

The change will also reduce the general government deficit by 740 million pounds in 2011/12. The changes will appear in public finances data from early 2013 onwards.

Hakuna Tabata: Full-Body Interval Workout Burns Fat in 4 Minutes ...

Lame Lion King reference aside ? and by lame, I mean super clever and totally awesome (a?thank you) ? Tabata interval training is no joke! As a cardio program that focuses on melting away fat, Tabata interval training will make you sweat more, burn more, and work your entire body, all while keeping the total workout under 15 minutes (which includes a?warm up and a?cool down). You?ll be on your way to leaner legs, a slimmer midsection, and an overall healthier physique in literally no time!

There?s a reason the Tabata method is known for its convenience: the no equipment, do-anywhere workout involves short bursts of high-intenisty moves performed over a period of just 4-minutes! This method is designed so that each Tabata routine consists of a?20-second, all-out work interval followed by a 10-second rest period, which together make one full set. And with only 20-seconds of cardio at a time,?you need to be shifting your butt into high-gear!?Perform the work-rest set combination eight times, and you?ve got yourself a full Tabata workout that will get your heart pumping and your energy systems kicking into overdrive?which means big improvements in the fat-burning department!

To understand how it works, here?s a way-easier version of a lesson you might find in a biology class, but since it?s getting us into kick-ass shape, it?s definitely worth understanding (as opposed to in bio, when its like, whatever): to provide our muscles with the energy they need during a workout, our bodies have the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems. Both systems are always working together, but our aerobic system always predominates during rest and low-intensity cardio?it?s during higher-intensity workouts which have us using up oxygen at higher rates that we shift towards the anaerobic system.

And what does this mean for us? Um, it means we?re getting an amazing workout that not only improves how efficient our energy systems are, but also helps with our resting metabolism, meaning we can burn more calories by doing nothing (score!). Tabata also provides a workout that burns fat across the entire body, providing an overall slim down in much less time, and giving you even better results than a straight-up cardio routine that lasts for an hour. Plus, you have the added bonus of eliminating time and money on expensive fitness gear ? ?Mo? Money? = no problems for us (sorry, Biggie).

Try this easy to follow Tabata workout by either completing all eight sets one after the other, or choosing four sets to do twice! You can even mix and match sets and pick the moves you like most to personalize your workout. Just remember, you need to push yourself during those 20-seconds of cardio if you want to see results.

Hakuna Tabata: Full-Body Interval Workout Burns Fat in 4 Minutes

So if you?re looking for a simple but powerful cardio workout that will give you results in the time it takes to?paint your nails and watch a cycle of TV commercials, I say no worries, start Tabata training today, you definitely will not regret it! It?s a problem free philosophy (?too far?)!

Hunger Games: Georgia Doctor and Low-Calorie Diet Advocate ...

Hunger Games: Georgia Doctor and Low-Calorie Diet Advocate Under Fire After Death of 16-Year-Old Girl Weighing Only 40?Pounds

Dr Andrew Chung, a cardiologist, is under considerable public scrutiny after the arrest of a friend, Ebony Berry, 38, and the death of her daughter, Markea Blakely-Berry. The 16-year-old weighed only 40 pounds and the police discovered that Blakely-Berry was a follower of Chung hunger diet where he advocates the value of staying ?wonderfully hungry? by eating no more than two pounds of food a day. Below is a video of his advocacy of the program, which appears as medically sound as hitting your head with a hammer because it feels so good to stop.

Chung has visited the mother in jail and insists that his philosophy of ?hunger is wonderful? does not advocate starvation.

The case against Blakely-Berry, pictured is one of simple neglect but there remains questions over the influence of Chung and his bizarre views. Chung?s arguments in favor of the program rarely leave the most elementary level with such explanation as ?being hungry is wonderful. The opposite of hungry, which is not hungry, is the opposite of wonderful, which is terrible.? He insists that Berry is ?an ordinary, single mom who?s stressed out.? Really? She had a daughter who was 16 and died at 40 pounds. She also has a history of child abuse from Michigan.

The potential liability for Chung could be challenging. He has protected speech rights in advocating this lifestyle. It could be compared to other extreme low-calorie programs offered by others. These programs are sometimes based on research showing low-calorie diets in animals like mice result in greater longevity. Unless he had knowledge of the abuse or directed Berry in some fashion, the liability exposure would remain limited. There is the question of whether an adult can survive and thrive on two pounds of food a day, a proposition contested by medical experts.

Health News - Palliative care experts call for better home care

Improved home care resources for people with conditions such as dementia, who would prefer to die at home, are key to providing better end of life care and reducing the strain of the UK?s ageing population on the NHS, according to researchers at King?s College London.

A new study, carried out by researchers from the Cicely Saunders Institute at King?s and funded by the National Institute for Health Research Health Services & Delivery Research (NIHR HS&DR) Programme, found that 42 per cent of patients with advanced non-malignant conditions reported a preference for home death, yet only 12 per cent of deaths from respiratory and neurological conditions occur at home, and only 6 per cent for dementia.

The research, a systematic review of existing literature on preferences regarding place of care and death, and factors influencing place of death, also found that living alone consistently reduced the chance of home death. Support at home from family carers without professional care made the chance of hospital death three times more likely than when professional carers were also involved. In these cases, the provision of professional home care support, either to support family carers or to provide direct care, would ensure that more patients with advanced non-malignant conditions die at home.

Improving care towards the end of life is an important priority for the public and for health professionals, with 10-20 per cent of all healthcare expenditure spent on this area.

Lead author of the report, Dr Fliss Murtagh, from the Cicely Saunders Institute, said: ?Although palliative care and hospices have done much to improve the care of those with advanced cancer, only about one in four of all UK deaths are due to cancer. Many more people die of other conditions, such as heart or respiratory failure, kidney failure, stroke or dementia.?

?Our research found that these patients spend more time in acute hospital care and are less likely to die at home in familiar surroundings.? Dr Murtagh suggests that ?enhanced home care and family support? could reduce the number of expected deaths which occur in hospitals.? She added: ?The increase in our ageing population, with correspondingly higher levels of co-morbidity, will likely mitigate against home deaths and in favour of hospital deaths, unless innovative approaches can be developed to support those with complex co-morbidities in the community.?

The research also found that:

???? A preference for home death among patients with advanced non-malignant conditions is less prevalent than for cancer patients, so attention should be given to achieving preferred place of care and death.
???? The presence or absence of a family or informal carer is a key component in enabling dying at home. Effective and sustained carer support, especially within the context of non-cancer illnesses with longer trajectories, is likely to increase rates of death at home.
???? Advance care planning is especially important for older people as their preferences are complex and may evolve over time. The advance care planning they require needs skilled professionals who can revisit preferences and plan sensitively and frequently in response to change.
???? For patients with chronic heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, whose pattern of illness is harder to predict, deterioration is often not discussed, preventing people from planning ahead to ensure their preferred place of care and death is achieved.

O2 UK to sell upcoming HTC flagship phone without charger

Android Central

If you're anything like us, you'll have plenty of wall chargers left over from devices you've long since parted company with. Observe above, the mangled husk of our two and a half year-old HTC Desire charger, still in service today. Knowing that many older chargers are still in use, O2 UK and HTC have decided to take a radical step to cut down on waste, and presumably save a bit of cash at the same time. O2 claims that 70 percent of all phone buyers already have a "relevant charger" at home.

The two are to offer an upcoming, unnamed HTC flagship device with a microUSB cable, but no charger, in an effort to improve their green credentials. And according to a report on UK tech site Pocket-Lint this morning, O2 and HTC are serious about this latest endeavor.

"I have a simple vision for O2: we want to take chargers out of boxes full stop," said Ronan Dunne, CEO of O2. "Right now, O2 with HTC has to go it alone on this matter - we both believe in it passionately enough that we can’t wait for the industry as a whole to join us in this crusade. That said, we hope that we will be able to pave the way for others to follow us as this has to be a collective effort if we are to achieve the bigger aim of eliminating chargers sold with every new phone in the UK."

We're all for cutting down on unnecessary waste, but from our perspective, the most interesting thing about this story is that it tacitly confirms that we're due a new HTC flagship in the weeks ahead, and that O2 will offer it. The fact that the device itself is unnamed suggests it's yet to be announced -- possibilities include the rumored One X+ and One X 5. We'll be watching with interest to see what devices emerge from HTC and O2 as 2012 draws to a close.

Fed's Plosser: Opposed to risky QE3 because it won't work

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - The Federal Reserve's latest monetary stimulus will not do much to boost economic growth or lower unemployment and raises the risk of longer-run inflation, Philadelphia Fed President Charles Plosser said on Tuesday.

Plosser, an inflation hawk, said he opposed the U.S. central bank's decision to embark on an open-ended program of asset purchases, starting with $40 billion per month in mortgage-backed securities.

"I believe that increasing monetary policy accommodation is neither appropriate nor likely to be effective in the current environment," Plosser told the CFA Society of Philadelphia and the Bond Club of Philadelphia at an event hosted by the Philly Fed.

Plosser said he believes many of the impediments to bringing down the nation's 8.1 percent jobless rate are structural in nature and therefore not amenable to monetary policy solutions.

Against that backdrop, the Fed may well need to begin raising interest rates before its current guidance of mid-2015, said Plosser, who is not a voting member on the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee this year.

Plosser said he does not see a large risk of a U.S. inflation outbreak but does see the Fed's highly stimulative policies as raising the threat of undesirably high consumer price increases in the future.

"By greatly expanding the size of the Fed's balance sheet, the new asset-purchase program will exacerbate the challenges that the Fed will face when it comes time to exit," Plosser said.

He expects the U.S. economy, which grew at a 1.7 percent annual rate in the second quarter, to expand by 2 percent this year and around 3 percent per year in 2013 and 2014.

In response to the financial crisis and deep recession of 2007-2009, the Fed slashed official borrowing costs to effectively zero and bought some $2.3 trillion in Treasury and mortgage-backed bonds to support the recovery.

Plosser argued that a proposal by one of his colleagues to set numerical targets or thresholds for unemployment and inflation that would govern the Fed's behavior would not work.

"I believe that using thresholds or triggers could easily put us behind the curve, if we have a tendency to underestimate future inflation," Plosser said.

He urged policymakers to show humility about the limits of monetary policy's ability to affect economic growth, suggesting policymakers have already reached the outer bounds of useful stimulus.

What you see is what you getA blog for Baby Boomers

Today?s thoughts are back to the day about ten years ago when a female co-worker looked over her cubicle at me and said: ?You realize you?re very lucky, don?t you?? ?To set the stage, she was one of those co-workers you?d rather forget each and every day at 5:00 because she was not a genuinely nice person. In that case, she was talking about the fact that four years earlier I had married my best friend. Her one bad marriage many years prior had left her without companion or child. My response to her ?lucky? statement was I was more fortunate to have my best friend and he is just as fortunate to have me as his best friend. I think every job has one of those co-workers who are willing to work overtime just to be annoying or mean.

Fast forward to now when two of my closest friends, one white and one black, have both tried dating sites within the past two years. These two live on opposite ends of the country and they have never met each other. They are totally different personalities with totally different life experiences. However, their dating site experiences are nearly identical. One?believes online dating sites are no more than human vending machines. My other friend?agrees. I am obviously the megaphone that relates information from one to the other.?

Both women have experienced lots of ?winks?, email exchanges, phones calls and some dates with the online ?matches?. Some of the winks, emails and phone calls never turned into dates because the men decided to back out before a date took place. Friend number one believes these guys just want to see what they can get out of the human vending machine, but they may never have?had intentions of actually meeting in person. Friend number two agrees. Both women have also experienced overbearing, needy men who never stop calling after the first date, even though the women may have told?them they are not interested in pursuing a relationship any further. Friend number one is curious about why men of another nationality never send her winks. Friend number two is curious about the fact that only men of another nationality send her winks. Friend number one is interested in meeting men of another culture. Friend number two wants to stay within her culture.

Recently I listened to a man who may have the answer.?He says the secret to finding a companion?may?be in what you reveal.?One of the newest daytime talk show hosts, Steve Harvey?is the guy I?m talking about. www.steveharveytv.com? Steve?has?written two books on the subject of relationships. His tips are not rocket science, but they may be things some women forget when?blinded by the ?He may be the one syndrome?. Harvey?s latest book and movie,?Act Like a Woman, Think Like a Man? validated what most of us already know. In?one particular show, he was talking to a woman who had outrageous demands in terms of what she wants in a man. Another show was with a?woman who posted an online photo?showing?extreme cleavage.

Some of Steve?s tips:

1)????? Make sure your online photo reflects how you really look. Don?t wear extreme cleavage, different color hair and definitely post a photo of yourself ALONE?.not with anyone else.

2)????? Don?t publish a bunch of ?do not wants? on your profile. Instead, explain or check off what you ?do? want, what you ?like? and where you want to go in life.

3)????? Don?t give out your real phone number. In fact, purchase a throw-away phone for use with any online introductions. Create a new and generic email address for dating site communication and never give out your address.

4)????? Don?t be willing to meet too soon. Spend an extraordinary amount of time communicating with the person online and asking him key questions. Those key questions include:

?????? a.?What are your short and long term goals?

?????? b. Why are you registered on a dating site?

?????? c.?What do you think of me so far? (This question comes after you have met)

According to Harvey, women hold the keys. Men of all ages see a woman?s physical features first. It is up to the woman to turn that kind of attraction into something substantial and lasting. He says that will never be done if you act desperate, act like a gold digger, move too fast, eat or drink too much, talk too much, look too sexy (or think you do) and make too many demands. He says most men, especially in the ?our time? age group, are looking for companionship, serenity and laughter.

It also comes to mind that the character, Christian from ?50 Shades of Gray? is not necessarily fake. In fact, guys like that do exist, but is that really what you want to deal with for the rest of your life? Aside from the whips, chains, handcuffs and oils, can you handle the control, domineering, bossy, jealous, overbearing, paranoid part that comes with the other part?

A real life example of a desperate woman who thinks life is passing her by, so she makes hasty decisions:

A 45 year old woman just married for the third time. Even though her credit was sub-standard, he insisted she quit her job, sell her house, marry him?and move?to another state. She did that. Now she lives in a house that does not bear her name, she has no property in her name, no freedom to work outside the home and she still has bad credit. Whoopi!!! Good luck. She probably thought he was Christian. Sounds like?her hot flashes are comin? around the corner or looking through the window already.?

Antron Brown wins Texas NHRA Fall Nationals

? Antron Brown raced to his fifth Top Fuel victory of the season Sunday to move in to a tie for the points lead, beating teammate Spencer Massey in the final of the Texas NHRA Fall Nationals.

Brown beat Massey with a 3.898-second run at 311.49 mph. Massey, tied with Brown for the lead in the season standings, finished in 3.945 at 300.60.

"This is definitely the way to rebound," said Brown, who fell to fourth in the standings after a first- round loss last week in the playoff opener in Concord, N.C.

"I have to give credit to my team for sticking together. We were winning in the first round in Charlotte when we broke an input shaft. It's so easy to get down after something like that. We came here, and the car was throwing us fits by being overaggressive. Brian (Corradi) and Mark (Oswald, co-crew chiefs) kept backing it off until they got a good handle on it in the semis."

Brown and Massey lead seven-time world champ Tony Schumacher by 24 points.

"In that final, we had to give it everything we had," said Brown, who beat Countdown contenders David Grubnic, Langdon and Morgan Lucas in the first three rounds. "We edged them, and it felt really good to win and to tie them in the points lead. We have four races left, and it's going to be a slugfest to the end. Everybody's throwing haymakers. It's an all-out battle royal right now."

Bob Tasca topped the Funny Car field, Allen Johnson won in Pro Stock, and Michael Ray in Pro Stock Motorcycle in the second of six playoff events in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.

In Funny Car, Tasca raced to his first victory of the season and fourth of his career in a tire-smoking final against defending series champion Matt Hagan.

Both cars lost traction near mid-track, but Tasca was able to guide his Ford Mustang to the finish line in front of Hagan's Dodge Charger. Neither driver is in the Countdown to the Championship.

Series leader Ron Capps, who lost to Hagan in the semifinals, increased his lead to 96 points over Mike Neff.

Johnson earned his fifth victory of the season and first in the Countdown playoffs by outrunning local favorite Erica Enders in the final round. Johnson's Dodge Avenger pulled away at the start and finished with a 6.598 at 210.93, while Enders' Chevy Cobalt slowed to a 6.835 at 209.39.

Johnson increased his points lead to 93 over defending champion Jason Line.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Texas native Ray claimed his first career victory, powering his Buell to a 6.920 at 192.77 to hold off Karen Stoffer's Suzuki. Ray moved to fourth in the standings.

Union asks NFL owners to end officials lockout

NEW YORK (AP) ? The NFL players' union sent an open letter to team owners calling for an end to the lockout of on-field officials and hinting that it's a violation of the contract between the players and the league.

The players were locked out for 4? months last year, and they emphasized in the letter, posted Sunday on the union's website, that a lack of a safe working environment exists with replacement officials working the games.

Domonique Foxworth, president of the NFL Players Association, Drew Brees and Scott Fujita are among the union members who signed it.

"Your decision to lock out officials with more than 1,500 years of collective NFL experience has led to a deterioration of order, safety and integrity," the NFL Players Association wrote. "This affirmative decision has not only resulted in poor calls, missed calls and bad game management, but the combination of those deficiencies will only continue to jeopardize player health and safety and the integrity of the game that has taken decades to build."

The NFL did not respond to a request from The Associated Press for comment.

In the letter signed by 12 current or former players, the players also ask why Commissioner Roger Goodell issues suspensions and fines "in the name of player health and safety" while the regular officials the league entrusts to maintain health and safety are locked out.

"As players, we see this game as more than the 'product' you reference at times," the letter said. "You cannot simply switch to a group of cheaper officials and fulfill your legal, moral, and duty obligations to us and our fans. You need to end the lockout and bring back the officials immediately."

The NFL locked out the officials in June after their contact expired. It has used replacements for the first time since 2001, when the regular officials missed only the first week of action.

But those replacements had experience at the highest levels of college football, and the current replacements come from lower college levels or from other leagues such as Arena Football.

There have been numerous complaints by players and coaches about the officiating ? certainly more than when the regular officials work ? and Sunday was no different. In one particularly embarrassing episode an official was removed from working a New Orleans game because he posted photos of himself in Saints gear on Facebook.

"The removal of the veteran officials from regular-season games left a group of your replacements who have proved to be incapable of keeping pace with the speed of the game," the players wrote. "Coaches and players have complained of numerous errors and failures including: erratic and missed calls on egregious holds and hits, increased skirmishes between players and confusion about game rules. Many replacements have lost control of games due to inexperience and unfamiliarity with players and rules."

Browns linebacker Fujita was suspended for three games by Goodell for his role in the Saints' bounties scandal, a suspension that was temporarily placed on hold by an appeals panel.

Among others signing the letter were Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, Packers center Jeff Saturday and former star safety Brian Dawkins, now retired.
