What Is the Best Treatment for Crohn's Disease that Is Proven?

Tuesday, July 31st, 2012 at 7:00 pm ?

What Is the Best Treatment for Crohn's Disease that Is Proven?Whether Crohn?s disease is mild or severe, it causes symptoms that are painful and embarrassing. Crohn?s disease is not curable, but there are many treatments available. Treating Crohn?s usually involves medications and dietary changes and varies according to the severity. Many people who have Crohn?s disease can manage it effectively with the help of medical care and are able to have productive, happy lives.

Mild cases of Crohn?s disease are typically treated with several types of medications. One is an antidiarrheal such as loperamide to slow down or stop the spasms that cause the diarrhea, the most common symptom of Crohn?s. Another is an aminosalicylate, such as mesalamine, which helps to reduce abdominal pain and diarrhea by reducing irritation in the intestines. Patients are advised to reduce or eliminate known triggers from their diet including caffeine, alcohol, and fatty or spicy foods. A low-fiber diet helps reduce the risk of diarrhea, which can irritate the intestines and trigger a flare-up.

For moderate cases of Crohn?s, in addition to an antidiarrheal and an aminosalicylate, a doctor will prescribe an antibiotic such as ciprofloxacin to reduce inflammation and treat abscesses and fistulas. Antibiotics will usually work if aminosalicylates do not. A corticosteroid such as prednisone may also be prescribed to help reduce inflammation.

Corticosteroids can have serious side effects, however, so a doctor will only prescribe them if other types of medications are not sufficiently managing the symptoms. In some cases, corticosteroids are administered intravenously. As with mild cases of Crohn?s, dietary changes are also advisable.
The best treatment for severe Crohn?s disease is often an immunomodulator medication such as azothioprine.

Immunomodulators suppress and weaken the immune system, keeping the cells in the digestive system from attacking. These medications are used if other medications do not help or if symptoms reoccur frequently. If medications and dietary changes are not enough, a doctor may recommend surgery to remove a damaged area of the intestines and reconnect healthy areas. Once symptoms are under control, medications and dietary changes are used to prevent flare-ups and keep the disease in remission for as long as possible.

In addition to a low-fiber, low-fat diet, eating wholesome, natural foods will eliminate preservatives and toxins and may help prevent flare-ups. Using food combining will also reduce digestive stress and help with Crohn?s disease. Food combining is more than just a way to eat. It is a system of eating the right foods in the right combinations. When you eat foods that do not work together, your stomach must work harder and produce enzymes that conflict with each other. This leads to pain, diarrhea, bloating and gas.

Food combining eliminates this conflict. Your stomach will produce only one type of acid, making digestion easier and gentler for your system. This will help prevent the irritation that can cause Crohn?s disease to become active. To help your body stay strong and healthy, and reduce gastrointestinal problems, try food combining and feel the difference it will make in your life.

Officials: Debt inspectors will help Greece prepare package of spending cuts, revenue boosts

ATHENS, Greece - Finance Ministry officials say international debt inspectors will help Greece prepare a package of spending cuts and other reforms so that it can keep getting billions in bailout funds crucial to its economy.

That means the inspectors won't be leaving at the end of July as originally expected.

The three officials requested anonymity Sunday because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

They told reporters that International Monetary Fund representative Poul Thomsen assured Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras on Friday that the inspectors would stay and that experts in their delegation would help Greece find places to cut spending and ways to boost revenue for a package worth euro14.5 billion ($17.9 billion).

The inspectors are supposed to issue a report on Athens' progress in September.

Report: Let private student loans be discharged in bankruptcy ...

Borrowers overwhelmed by private student loan debt often discover an ugly truth too late ? these loans can?t be discharged in bankruptcy like other types of consumer loans.

A new report on private student loans by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the U.S. Department of Education suggests it may be time to change that. The agencies say these loans offer so little flexibility to struggling borrowers that Congress might consider revising the bankruptcy law given today?s tough economy.

Bankruptcy, of course, should never be entered into lightly because the repercussions are long-lasting. Those who file for bankruptcy end up paying higher interest rates for credit cards or for a mortgage, if they can get one. A bankruptcy can also knock you out of the running for a job. And the black mark stays on credit reports for as long as 10 years.

But when twentysomethings have $100,000 or more in private loans and little prospect of finding work, they need the kind of relief that will give them a fresh start. And that?s bankruptcy.

?The issue has gained a lot of attention and support as people become more aware of how different and more dangerous private loans are compared to federal loans, and how little recourse private loan borrowers have if they hit hard times,? said Lauren Asher, president of the California-based Project on Student Debt.

Asher adds that private loans are similar to credit cards ? but plastic can be discharged in bankruptcy.

?They don?t call credit cards financial aid when they?re used to pay tuition or books,? she said. ?Neither are private loans. ? They are a private and commercial product designed to make money. They are like credit cards and charge the highest rates [to those] who can least afford them.?

Before the mid-1970s, federal and private education loans could be wiped out in bankruptcy. Congress then started to restrict federal loans from being discharged. In the mid-1980s, private loans guaranteed by a nonprofit agency became exempt from bankruptcy. Many lenders took this route to make their loans bankruptcy-proof.

A 2005 bankruptcy law further shielded financial institutions ? giving their loans the same treatment as federal loans. Now, no education loan can be discharged without an ?undue hardship,? a hurdle rarely overcome.

It?s so rare, in fact, that a bankruptcy judge in Baltimore made national headlines recently when he discharged about $340,000 in student loans, says Robert Grossbart, a Baltimore bankruptcy attorney. The borrower suffered from a disorder that prevented her from working.

The CFPB and the Education Department noted that the congressional record has little to say about why private loans in 2005 needed special treatment over other consumer loans. The two agencies said they found little evidence that the change has resulted in lower loan prices to consumers or greater access to credit.

Lenders aren?t happy about the prospect of bankruptcy changes.

?We made a contract with students to repay their loans, and that?s how the banking system operates,? said Richard Hunt, president of the Washington-based Consumer Bankers Association. Hunt predicts a rush of bankruptcy filings if private student loans are allowed to be discharged in bankruptcy.

And if banks continue to make loans after the law is changed, Hunt said, ?there is no question you will get an increase in interest rates.?

Student loan giant Sallie Mae has been open to compromise, supporting a bankruptcy option for loans after borrowers made good-faith payments for five to seven years.

Otherwise, new grads with high debt and few assets could immediately file for bankruptcy, Sallie Mae?s president, Jack Remondi, warned during a congressional hearing last week That was why student loans became exempt in the first place, he said.

Sallie Mae contends that if private loans become dischargeable in bankruptcy, so should federal loans.

But federal loans aren?t the big problem.

When borrowers get into trouble with federal loans, they can get a deferral, forbearance or choice of flexible repayment methods. For instance, borrowers with high debt and low incomes can qualify for an income-based repayment plan that reduces monthly payments ? to zero in some cases. The government also offers loan forgiveness for public service workers.

Riding a bike is probably the most exhilarating experience one can have. Yes, a two wheeler is inherently more unstable than a four wheeler but the sheer adrenaline rush one gets out of riding a bike is not something that a car can come close to. No matter what power output a bike has, it is always fun driving it around and equally exhausting having one breakdown in the middle of nowhere. With a car, one can safely lock it up and trudge along the road until they find assistance but with a bike this is simply not safe neither secure. Hence, having a motorcycle breakdown cover is vital.

Coverage Levels With Motorcycles Differ

Just as it is with cars, motorcycle covers also differ in the level of assistance. One can easily break down all plans into three levels. The most basic offers only minor roadside assistance while the most comprehensive provide a backup vehicle when in trouble.

Under basic coverage plans you get only roadside assistance that will fix any mechanical issue but in case the assistance crew cannot
help you, your bike gets towed to the nearest garage leaving you stranded for the time being. This coverage usually costs around $60 annually or an equivalent amount in Europe. The intermediate plan usually offers travel assistance wherein a broke motorcycle will make you eligible to get to your nearest destination using any of the available local transport services. When the bike is ready to be used, it will be delivered to you. The comprehensive service can be four times as costly as the basic one but in return you get a replacement car to drive along while the bike is being repaired. This usually is free of cost and the largest companies deal offshore in foreign lands as well.

Making The Best Use Of Motorcycle Assistance Services

No matter what scheme you sign up for and with which company you do, it is always best to learn a little about motorcycle maintenance. The reason is simple ? it takes nearly 15 to 20 minutes for assistance to reach you no matter where you are. Being stranded in a car for 15 minutes is no big deal as one can turn on the heater and listen to the radio. However, with a bike, there is no safety, no cover or protection from wrongdoers. Hence, having basic bike maintenance knowledge can do a world of good.

Learning about the most common reasons why a bike fails to start up will help you get to a safe location while waiting for an assistance crew to reach you. An unresponsive spark plug, clogged carburetor and lack of fuel are three things that bikers commonly have to deal with. You need not call on roadside assistance for these three things. Take a look at online videos and instructions to know what you have to do in these situations to save yourself the hassle of going through roadside assistance for nothing. Remember: any extra repairs not covered under roadside assistance plan are charged to your account.

TORONTO, July 26, 2012 /CNW/ - Close to 400 bicycle riders and crew will begin a 600 kilometre journey from Toronto to Montreal in the 14th Annual Friends For Life Bike Rally, presented by Scotiabank, on Sunday, July 29, 2012. Departing at 9 a.m. from Queen?s Park in Toronto, the 2012 Friends For Life Bike Rally is raising money for Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA).

The services provided by PWA are essential to many people in Toronto. People who are HIV positive are living longer, but can have greater challenges. PWA?s core services like food programs, treatment resources and financial assistance for men, transmen, transwomen, women and children living with HIV/AIDS in our community are more important than ever.

Glen Murray, MPP Toronto Centre, has joined the Bike Rally for the first time this year. ?It was 10 years and 50 pounds ago that I last undertook a long distance fundraising ride. I share the nervousness of other first time riders but I am confident because with each passing day of training, the seat seems more comfortable and the distance a little shorter,? said Mr. Murray. ?When Premier McGuinty appointed me Minister of Training, Colleges & Universities, I never imagined this was the training he had in mind. I also never realized how inspired I would be by the courage of people living with AIDS.?

Noting the need to continue to support people living with HIV/AIDS, Mr. Murray said, ?This disease hasn?t gone away and neither has the stigma associated with it. PWA?s support ranging from the basics of life?to the emotional and social support for people dealing with HIV/AIDS is unparalleled and funding is essential to keep the organization running. Knowing this makes it easy to get on my bike for six days and ask people to donate.?

Through its Bright Future community giving program, Scotiabank is proud to be on board for the fifth year as presenting sponsor of the Friends For Life Bike Rally and so doing, support the important work of PWA. The event has contributed more than $10 million in the past 13 years to support people living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto. The Bike Rally is a grassroots, volunteer-driven fundraiser that began in 1999 when two friends challenged each other to cycle from Toronto to Montreal to support PWA.

Cameroon ex-minister tried in botched presidential jet buy

A Cameroon court has started the trial of former interior minister Marafa Hamidou Yaya who is accused of embezzling $29 million dollars intended as a downpayment on a presidential jet.

The trial began Thursday with two witnesses who gave evidence against Marafa, who is on trial with five co-accused. The hearing ran late into the night and is due to continue on Friday with ten more prosecution witnesses.

Marafa and his co-accused, including the head of the now defunct flag carrier Camair, Yves Michel Fotso, are accused of stealing 23.6 million euros allocated in 2001 as a first payment for a Boeing plane for President Paul Biya.

Cameroon then rented another plane called the Albatross but this proved defective during a first flight with the presidential family and was forced to make an emergency landing.

At the beginning of May, a former ambassador to the United States, Jerome Mendouga, was jailed for 10 years in connection with the same affair.

Biya, who has been in power since 1982, has launched a major drive against corruption, which has seen several of his former aides brought before the courts.

He won election to a sixth term of office in October 2011 in a vote widely criticised by the opposition and diplomats as riddled with irregularities and fraud.

How to Help Once We're Home - THE VILLAGE - blog*spot

If you haven't heard of Jen Hatmaker you've got to check her out! ?She is a hilarious author with a love for God and a passion for orphans. ?A few months back I ran across a post she had written on her blog about how to help someone going through adoption! ?I saved it in my favorites for when we got closer - - well, we are getting PRETTY close (3 1/2 days!!!!) so I thought I should post!

FYI - I was just going to post how to help beyond the airport but since we are still in the wait stage for "B" I just left both in! ?Enjoy!

HOW TO BE THE VILLAGE - c/o Jen Hatmaker (Check out her blog here!)

Let?s break this down into two categories:

Supporting Families Before the Airport

Your friends are adopting. They?re in the middle of dossiers and home studies, and most of them are somewhere in the middle of Waiting Purgatory. Please let me explain something about WP: It sucks in every way. Oh sure, we try to make it sound better than it feels by using phrases like ?We?re trusting in God?s plan? and ?God is refining me? and ?Sovereignty trumps my feelings? and crazy bidness like that. But we are crying and aching and getting angry and going bonkers when you?re not watching. It?s hard. It hurts. It feels like an eternity even though you can see that it is not. It is harder for us to see that, because many of us have pictures on our refrigerators of these beautiful darlings stuck in an orphanage somewhere while we?re bogged down in bureaucracy and delays.?

How can you help? By not saying or doing these things:

1. ?God?s timing is perfect!? (Could also insert: ?This is all God?s plan!? ?God is in charge!?) As exactly true as this may be, when you say it to a waiting parent, we want to scratch your eyebrows off and make you eat them with a spoon. Any trite answer that minimizes the struggle is as welcomed as a sack of dirty diapers. You are voicing something we probably already believe while not acknowledging that we are hurting and that somewhere a child is going to bed without a mother again. Please never say this again. Thank you.

2. ?Are you going to have your own kids?? (Also in this category: ?You?ll probably get pregnant the minute your adoption clears!? ?Since this is so hard, why don?t you just try to have your own kids?? ?Well, at least you have your own kids.?) The subtle message here is: You can always have legitimate biological kids if this thing tanks. It places adoption in the Back-up Plan Category,?where it does not belong for us. When we flew to Ethiopia with our first travel group from our agency, out of 8 couples, we were the only parents with biological kids. The other 7 couples chose adoption first. Several of them were on birth control.?Adoption counts as real parenting, and if you believe stuff Jesus said, it might even be closer to the heart of God than regular old procreation. (Not to mention the couples that grieved through infertility already. So when you say, ?Are you going to have your own kids?? to a woman who tried for eight years, then don?t be surprised if she pulls your beating heart out like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.)

3. For those of you in Christian community, it is extremely frustrating to hear: ?Don?t give up on God!? or ?Don?t lose faith!? It implies that we are one nanosecond away from tossing our entire belief system in the compost pile because we are acting sad or discouraged. It?s condescending and misses the crux of our emotions. I can assure you, at no point in our story did we think about kicking Jesus to the curb,?but we still get to cry tears and feel our feelings, folks. Jesus did. And I?m pretty sure he went to heaven when he died.?

4. We?re happy to field your questions about becoming a transracial family or adopting a child of another race, but please don?t use this moment to trot out your bigotry. (Cluelessness is a different thing, and we try to shrug that off. Like when someone asked about our Ethiopian kids, ?Will they be black?? Aw, sweet little dum-dum.) The most hurtful thing we heard during our wait was from a black pastor who said, ?Whatever you do, don?t change their last name to Hatmaker, because they are NOT Hatmakers. They?ll never be Hatmakers. They are African.??What the????I wonder if he?d launch the same grenade if we adopted white kids from Russia? If you?d like to know what we?re learning about raising children of another race or ask respectful, legitimate questions, by all means, do so. We care about this and take it seriously, and we realize we will traverse racial landmines with our family. You don?t need to point out that we are adopting black kids and we are, in fact, white. We?ve actually already thought of that.

5. Saying nothing is the opposite bad. I realize with blogs like this one, you can get skittish on how to talk to a crazed adopting Mama without getting under her paper-thin skin or inadvertently offending her. I get it. (We try hard not to act so hypersensitive. Just imagine that we are paper-pregnant with similar hormones surging through our bodies making us cry at Subaru commercials just like the 7-month preggo sitting next to us. And look at all this weight we?ve gained.?See?) But acting like we?re not adopting or struggling or waiting or hoping or grieving is not helpful either. If I was pregnant with a baby in my belly, and no one ever asked how I was feeling or how much longer or is his nursery ready or can we plan a shower, I would have to audition new friend candidates immediately.?

Here?s what we would love to hear Before the Airport:

1. Just kind, normal words of encouragement. Not the kind that assume we are one breath away from atheism. Not the kind that attempt to minimize the difficulties and tidy it all up with catchphrases.?We don?t actually need for you to fix our wait.?We just want you to be our friend and acknowledge that the process is hard and you care about us while we?re hurting. That is GOLD. I was once having lunch with my friend Lynde when AWAA called with more bad news about Ben?s case, and I laid my head down on the table in the middle of Galaxy Caf? and bawled. Having no idea what to do with such a hot mess, she just cried with me. Thank you for being perfect that day, Lynde.?

2. Your questions are welcomed! We don?t mind telling you about the court system in Ethiopia or the in-country requirements in Nicaragua or the rules of the foster system. We?re glad to talk about adoption, and we?re thankful you care. I assure you we didn?t enter adoption lightly, so sharing details of this HUGE PIECE OF OUR LIVES is cathartic. Plus, we want you to know more because we?re all secretly hoping you?ll adopt later. (This is not true.) (Yes it is.)

3. When you say you?re praying for us and our waiting children, and you actually really are, not only does that soothe our troubled souls, but according to Scripture, it activates the heavens. So pray on, dear friends. Pray on. That is always the right thing to say. And please actually do it. We need people to stand in the gap for us when we are too tired and discouraged to keep praying the same words another day.?

4. If you can, please become telepathic to determine which days we want to talk about adoption and which days we?d rather you just show up on our doorstep with fresh figs from the Farmer?s Market (thanks, Katie) or kidnap us away in the middle of the day to go see?Bridesmaids. Sometimes we need you to make us laugh and remember what it feels like to be carefree for a few hours. If you?re not sure which day we?re having, just pre-buy movie tickets and show up with the figs, and when we answer the door, hold them all up and ask, ?Would you like to talk for an hour uninterrupted about waiting for a court date?? We?ll respond to whichever one fits.?

Supporting Families After the Airport

You went to the airport. The baby came down the escalator to cheers and balloons. The long adoption journey is over and your friends are home with their new baby / toddler / twins / siblings / teenager. Everyone is happy. Maybe Fox News even came out and filmed the big moment and ?your friend? babbled like an idiot and didn?t say one constructive word about adoption and also she looked really sweaty during her interview. (Really? That happened to me too. Weird.)?

How can you help? By not saying or doing these things:?

1. I mean this nicely, but don?t come over for awhile. Most of us are going to hole up in our homes with our little tribe and attempt to create a stable routine without a lot of moving parts. This is not because we hate you; it?s because we are trying to establish the concept of ?home? with our newbies, and lots of strangers coming and going makes them super nervous and unsure, especially strangers who are talking crazy language to them and trying to touch their hair.?

2. Please do not touch, hug, kiss, or use physical affection with our kids for a few months. We absolutely know your intentions are good, but attachment is super tricky with abandoned kids, and they have had many caregivers, so when multiple adults (including extended family) continue to touch and hold them in their new environment, they become confused about who to bond with. This actually delays healthy attachment egregiously. It also teaches them that any adult or stranger can touch them without their permission, and believe me, many adoptive families are working HARD to undo the damage already done by this position. Thank you so much for respecting these physical boundaries.?

3. For the next few months, do not assume the transition is easy. For 95% of us, it so is not. And this isn?t because our family is dysfunctional or our kids are lemons, but because?this phase is so very hard on everyone. I can?t tell you how difficult it was to constantly hear: ?You must be so happy!? and ?Is life just so awesome now that they?re here??? and ?Your family seems just perfect now!? I wanted that to be true so deeply, but I had no idea how to tell you that our home was actually a Trauma Center. (I did this in a passive aggressive way by writing?this blog, which was more like ?An Open Letter to Everyone Who Knows Us and Keeps Asking Us How Happy We Are.?) Starting with the right posture with your friends ??this is hard right now?? will totally help you become a safe friend to confide in / break down in front of / draw strength from.?

4. Do not act shocked if we tell you how hard the early stages are. Do not assume adoption was a mistake. Do not worry we have ruined our lives. Do not talk behind our backs about how terribly we?re doing and how you?re worried that we are suicidal. Do not ask thinly veiled questions implying that we are obviously doing something very, very wrong. Do not say things like, ?I was so afraid it was going to be like this? or ?Our other friends didn?t seem to have these issues at all.? Just let us struggle. Be our friends in the mess of it. We?ll get better.?

5. If we?ve adopted older kids, please do not ask them if they ?love America so much? or are ?so happy to live in Texas.? It?s this simple: adoption is born from horrible loss. In an ideal world, there would be no adoption, because our children would be with their birth families, the way God intended. I?ll not win any points here, but I bristle when people say, ?Our adopted child was chosen for us by God before the beginning of time.? No he wasn?t. He was destined for his birth family. God did not create these kids to belong to us. He didn?t decide that they should be born into poverty or disease or abandonment or abuse and despair aaaaaaaall so they could finally make it into our homes, where God intended them to be. No. We are a very distant Plan B. Children are meant for their birth families, same as my biological kids were meant for mine. Adoption is one possible answer to a very real tragedy??after?it has already happened, not?before?as the impetus for abandonment. There is genuine grief and sorrow when your biological family is disrupted by death and poverty, and our kids have endured all this and more. So when you ask my 8-year-old if he is thrilled to be in Texas, please understand that he is not. He misses his country, his language, his food, his family. Our kids came to us in the throes of grief, as well they should. Please don?t make them smile and lie to you about how happy they are to be here.?

6. Please do not disappear. If I thought the waiting stage was hard, it does not even hold the barest candle to what comes after the airport.?Not. The. Barest. Candle.?Never have I felt so isolated and petrified. Never have I been so overwhelmed and exhausted. We need you after the airport way more than we ever needed you before. I know you?re scared of us, what with our dirty hair and wild eyes and mystery children we?re keeping behind closed doors so they don?t freak out more than they already have, but please find ways to stick around. Call. Email. Check in. Post on our Facebook walls. Send us funny cards. Keep this behavior up for longer than six days.?

Here?s what we would love to hear or experience After the Airport:

1. Cook for your friends. Put together a meal calendar and recruit every person who even remotely cares about them. We didn?t cook dinners for one solid month, and folks, that may have single handedly saved my sanity. There simply are not words to describe how exhausting and overwhelming those first few weeks are, not to mention the lovely jetlag everyone came home with. And if your friends adopted domestically right up the street, this is all still true, minus the jetlag.?

2. If we have them, offer to take our biological kids for an adventure or sleepover. Please believe me: their lives just got WHACKED OUT, and they need a break, but their parents can?t give them one because they are 1.) cleaning up pee and poop all day, 2.) holding screaming children, 3.) spending all their time at doctors? offices, and 4.) falling asleep in their clothes at 8:15pm. Plus, they are in lockdown mode with the recently adopted, trying to shield them from the trauma that is Walmart.?

3. Thank you for getting excited with us over our little victories. I realize it sounds like a very small deal when we tell you our kindergartener is now staying in the same room as the dog, but if you could?ve seen the epic level of freakoutedness this dog caused her for three weeks, you would understand that?this is really something. When you encourage us over our incremental progress, it helps. You remind us that we ARE moving forward and these little moments are worth celebrating. If we come to you spazzing out, please remind us where we were a month ago. Force us to acknowledge their gains. Be a cheerleader for the healing process.?

4. Come over one night after our kids are asleep and sit with us on our porch. Let me tell you: we are all lonely in those early weeks. We are home, home, home, home, home. Good-bye, date nights. Good-bye, GNO?s. Good-bye, spontaneous anything. Good-bye, church. Good-bye, big public outings. Good-bye, community group. Good-bye, nightlife. So please bring some community to our doorstep. Bring friendship back into our lives. Bring adult conversation and laughter. And bring an expensive bottle of wine.?

5. If the shoe fits, tell adopting families how their story is affecting yours. If God has moved in you over the course of our adoption, whether before the airport or after, if you?ve made a change or a decision, if somewhere deep inside a fire was lit, tell us, because it is spiritual water on dry souls. There is nothing more encouraging than finding out God is using our families for greater kingdom work, beautiful things we would never know or see. We gather the holy moments in our hands every day, praying for eyes to see God?s presence, his purposes realized in our story. When you put more holy moments in our hands to meditate on, we are drawn deeper into the Jesus who led us here.?

Here?s one last thing: As you watch us struggle and celebrate and cry and flail, we also want you to know that adoption is beautiful, and a thousand times we?ve looked at each other and said, ?What if we would?ve said no?? God invited us into something monumental and lovely, and we would?ve missed endless moments of glory had we walked away. We need you during these difficult months of waiting and transitioning, but we also hope you see that we serve a faithful God who heals and actually sets the lonely in families, just like He said He would. And even through the tears and tantrums (ours), we look at our children and marvel that God counted us worthy to raise them. We are humbled. We?ve been gifted with a very holy task, and when you help us rise to the occasion, you have an inheritance in their story; your name will be counted in their legacy.?

Because that day you brought us pulled pork tacos was the exact day I needed to skip dinner prep and hold my son on the couch for an hour, talking about Africa and beginning to bind up his emotional wounds. When you kidnapped me for two hours and took me to breakfast, I was at the very, very, absolute end that morning, but I came home renewed, able to greet my children after school with fresh love and patience. When you loved on my big kids and offered them sanctuary for a night, you kept the family rhythm in sync at the end of a hard week.?

Thank you for being the village. You are so important.?

Thank you all for your love and support along the way to bringing Nahome into our family! ?Please don't leave us now - this is when we need your prayers, love, encouragement, and support the most!

self improvement - How To Quickly Develop An Attractive Personality

If there's one thing that can help you out in every single aspect of life, it's having an attractive personality. Unlike your looks, which you're pretty much stuck with, you can develop your personality. And most people would readily agree that while looks are important, it's personality that really matters. In this article, you'll learn some proven tips that will help you develop an attractive personality that will make life much, much easier.

The first thing to do is think of somebody to model. This can be a real person you know, a real person you don't know, or even a character from a book or a movie. You can even put together several personality traits from several different people. Just don't get your brain from somebody named "Abby Normal."

One thing that has a dramatic impact on your personality is your voice. If your voice is high and squeaky, like Mickey Mouse, you won't ever be elected president. On the other hand, if you sound like the Dark Knight, you wouldn't make a very good kindergarten teacher. Make sure to model your voice to be congruent with the personality you're trying to create.

It's one thing to wish to change, but it's quite different to actually making the changes. It can feel very uncomfortable changing the way you walk and talk, so it may take some getting used to. But the more you practice these new behaviors, the more quickly they'll become who you are. Just dedicate yourself to making them happen, rather than vaguely wishing they'll happen on their own.

A powerful way to affect immediate change is to alter the way you dress. These make a quick impression on people. It's easy to change your personality when people are treating you differently.

One way to help you change your persona is to engage in different activities. Try different sports, hobbies, or other activities that people with your desired personality would engage in.

Another great way to change your personality is to hang out with different people. Obviously, if you are trying to become known as a intelligent, forward thinking genius, you shouldn't spend time in the sports bar every weekend. Maybe hanging out with the chess club is a better alternative.

You see, it really easy to change your personality. Just figure out the person you want to be, and start doing things they'd do. Talk they way you imagine them talking, and act the way you imagine them acting. You'll be a completely new person in no time.

If you'd like to take advantage of some powerful mind control techniques to powerfully improve your life, then head on over to the self improvement site today. You'll find some powerfully effective tools to help you get whatever you want out of life.

What are the benefits of buying a property through countrywide ...

bookcover4_corporatelaw.jpg

The prevailing global economic crisis has resulted in a large number of countrywide foreclosures located in some of the prime real estate areas in the US. While the influx of foreclosed homes has increased the liability of banks and mortgage companies, it has presented home buyers with a very lucrative investment opportunity as these properties are being sold at highly reduced prices.

Benefits of buying a property through countrywide foreclosures

Investing in a property available through countrywide foreclosures has a wide range of advantages like:

1. Highly affordable housing options ? One of the most unique features of countrywide foreclosures is that they are being offered at prices that are much below their actual worth with some properties going as low as half of their market rates.

2. Great investment opportunity ? Investing in a foreclosure makes for a lucrative venture as a large number of properties which are located in upscale neighborhoods having a prime real estate value are being offered at very low asking prices.

3. Various financial incentives for buyers ? Another unique feature of buying a foreclosure are the wide range of tax credit abatements, low interest housing loans and down payment assistance schemes for buyers interested in purchasing foreclosed homes.

Guidelines for purchasing a suitable home through countrywide foreclosures

Trying to zero in on a suitable home from a wide range of countrywide foreclosures can be a daunting task. Therefore the following set of instructions will be helpful in selecting a suitable deal efficiently:

1. Understand housing requirements ? Get a clear idea of your housing needs like the size, location and the number of rooms you would require before looking for suitable deals on countrywide foreclosures.

2. Enquire about the local foreclosure laws ? Consult a lawyer and enquire about the local foreclosure laws in your preferred locality.

3. Search suitable properties ? Look for suitable properties through classifieds, online listings, public records and real estate websites.

4. Do a comparison test- Zero in on the best bargain deal by comparing the asking prices of properties that suit your requirements closely.

5. Inspect the house ? Ensure that the house is in a good condition and has a clean record of taxes before going ahead.

6. Submit your offer ? The most important step is to evaluate the worth of the property and then submit a sensible offer to the sellers.

With a large number of highly affordable properties available through countrywide foreclosures owning a home can now be possible at a great bargain deal. So go ahead and make a value home purchase today.

Children, families struggling after recession: report

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - More children and families across the United States are facing poverty and economic instability following the recession, new data shows, raising concerns about the weak economy's long-term impact on the next generation of Americans.

A report released on Wednesday found a rising number of children in nearly every state have families that have seen deeper poverty and economic insecurity since 2005, even as some other areas such as education and healthcare have improved.

The findings from the Annie E. Casey Foundation showed 2.4 million more children slipped into poverty from 2005 to 2010, from 13.3 million to 15.7 million, the data showed.

"The economic well-being of children and families has plummeted because of the recession," researchers at the non-profit youth advocacy group wrote in their annual report on the state of U.S. children.

The report, closely watched by policy makers, is based on data compiled from various government agencies such as the Census Bureau and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For a graphic, see http://link.reuters.com/muf69s.

Its findings come amid an uncertain recovery in the wake of a national recession that ran from late 2007 to mid-2009 and led to significant unemployment and housing foreclosures.

According to the foundation, in nearly every state and Washington, D.C., there were a growing number of children whose parents did not have stable, full-time employment and whose families were burdened with high housing costs.

Still, there were some gains in health and education.

Dozens of states saw more parents with high school diplomas and fewer teen births. Children in more than 40 states gained access to health insurance, and there were fewer deaths among children and teenagers. Many states also saw steady improvement in the number of children enrolled in preschool as well as gains in reading and math proficiency.

That has created "a mixed picture for kids over the last half decade or so," said Laura Speer, the group's associate director for policy reform and data.

MIXED PICTURE

The effect on black, Hispanic and other minority children as well as those who are poor is a particular concern.

Even though the number of U.S. minority children is outpacing whites, the report found those children are hit the hardest, especially when it comes to education.

For example, more than 80 percent of minority children still struggled with reading in the fourth grade compared to 58 percent of white children, data showed.

"Poor kids and kids of color continue to fall behind their more affluent and advantaged classmates," Patrick McCarthy, the foundation's president and chief executive, told reporters.

Additionally, black and American Indian children were twice as likely as whites to have both parents without secure employment. Black, American Indian and Hispanics were also more likely to have just one parent at home than their white peers.

Those disparities could have a profound impact on children's own employment and stability as adults, he added. "These declines in income and assets for families are likely to have a very real and lasting effect on their children."

Additionally, the recession's impact on children varies widely state-by-state, according to the report, which ranks states based on children's overall well-being.

Children in the Northeast and the Upper Midwest fared best, while those living in the Southeast or the Southwest had the worst outcomes. Eight out of 10 states that have the most children also ranked the worst, including California and Texas.

The findings come as state governors continue to wrestle with fiscal problems from the recession. [ID:nL2E8IHCR6] Despite such trouble, policy makers should not lose sight of investing in the nation's youth, the report urged.

Overall, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Jersey and Minnesota topped the list for child well-being while Arizona, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico and Mississippi scored lowest.

Economically, states where natural resources are driving an economic boom - North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Wyoming - ranked highest, while Arizona, Louisiana, New Mexico, Nevada and Mississippi were at the bottom.

Nonprofit Jobs: 5 Ways To Improve Your Job Search Results

Is your job search going a little slow for your taste? You're definitely not alone on that front. Job seekers all over the country are struggling to find work in an economy that is still sluggish. There is no magic button that you can press that will make things better, but there are some techniques that will help you improve your chances.

Since you are just one of many people looking for work, you are going to have to make sure that your job application stands out from the competition. Here are five ways to do just that:

  • Think like an employer. This means you need to explain how your experience and skills will specifically benefit the organization. Don't assume the hiring manager will be able to connect the dots.
  • Use buzz words. Key words should be sprinkled throughout your resume. These will help your application come up first if the employer uses an applicant tracking system. If you are unsure which words to use, look at the job description the employer posted and see which phrases are most prevalent.
  • Network. Not all jobs will be posted online, so making contacts will be crucial to your job search efforts. It's also much easier to get hired if you can get a good recommendation from someone who already works at the organization.
  • Know your strengths. Highlight your strongest accomplishments from your previous jobs. Employers are more interested in what you accomplished than where you worked.
  • Make goals. Create a list of what you want to accomplish each day. It's much easier to stay focused when you have attainable goals you can reach. For example, you can make it a point to apply to three jobs a day or make two new networking contacts.

Printed photonic crystal mirrors shrink on-chip lasers down to size

ScienceDaily (July 22, 2012) ? Electrical engineers at The University of Texas at Arlington and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have devised a new laser for on-chip optical connections that could give computers a huge boost in speed and energy efficiency.

The team published its findings on July 22, 2012 in Nature Photonics.

At just 2 micrometers in height -- smaller than the width of a human hair -- the surface-emitting laser's vastly lower profile could make it cheaper and easier for manufacturers to integrate high-speed optical data connections into the microprocessors powering the next generation of computers.

Traditionally, edge-emitter lasers are considered as the candidate for on-chip optical links. But since mirrors are hard to form in such lasers and because the lasers occupy a large chip area, researchers have been challenged to find a practical way to monolithically integrate the mirrors on silicon chips.

Surface-emitting lasers necessary for a high-speed optical links between computer cores could be 20 to 30 micrometers tall, slightly bigger than one hole in the mesh of a car's oil filter. Yet the research team's engineers say that on a 1.5-micrometer wavelength optically connected chip, lasers of that size dwarf their silicon surroundings.

"It sits tall on the chip, like a tower," says Zhenqiang Ma, a UW-Madison professor of electrical and computer engineering. "That is definitely not acceptable."

Weidong Zhou, a UT Arlington professor of electrical engineering, says one challenge was integrating light into silicon chips, as silicon itself is not an efficient light emitter.

Zhou and Ma have collaborated to shrink on-chip lasers in recent years with funding from the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Army Research Office and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

As a solution, the researchers propose replacing layers and layers of reflectors necessary in the traditional distributed Bragg reflector laser design with two highly reflective photonic crystal mirrors. Composed of compound semiconductor quantum well materials, each mirror is held in place with silicon nanomembranes, extremely thin layers of a silicon.

Zhou says integrating compound semiconductor quantum wells with silicon is a promising approach. "We apply a nanomembrane transfer printing process to accomplish this goal," he says.

One layer of photonic crystal is equal to about 15 to 30 layers of dielectric reflectors found in conventional lasers. As a result, manufacturers could fabricate 2-micrometer-high lasers for data links with performance that could equal current designs.

In addition to their larger size, reflectors for conventional lasers are made of materials grown only at very high temperatures, which means they can damage the chip they are placed upon during production. Since fabrication via transfer printing can occur at much lower temperatures, Zhou and Ma hope their laser design can be used to place optical links on silicon chips with much less wasted material, time and effort.

Optical data links already exist at the largest scales of data networks -- the Internet's backbone is composed mainly of fiber-optic links between countries, cities and houses. But currently, that data moves over to slower metal connections and wiring as it travels from a regional hub to your house, your computer and eventually between the CPU cores within of the processor powering your machine.

"In the future, you'll see a move to optical at each step," Ma says. "The last step is within the chip, module to module optical links on the chip itself."

Through Semerane Inc., the Texas-based startup Zhou and Ma founded, the two hope to implement their production process in functional on-chip photonic crystal membrane lasers that could eventually be part of the next generation high-speed computer processors.

"We believe this laser will be used to make data links more practically available," Ma says.

"It is truly an interdisciplinary team effort," Zhou says. "The co-existence of photonics with electronics on the chip level shall enable multi-functional energy-efficient super-chips for applications in computing, communications, sensing, imaging and so on."

With widespread adoption of processors that use their laser design for optical links, Ma and Zhou could have a hand in increasing the speed along the local leg of the information superhighway.

"Eventually, a CPU core in America could be connected to another CPU core in Asia, with optical connections all along the chain," Ma says.
