General Summary:
This position is funded by an external grant source. If the grant terminates for any reason, if grant funding is lost or reduced for any reason, or if the budgetary needs for fulfilling the grant requirements change, your employment with the University will be immediately discontinued.
The Science/Math Coach will report to the project team for the DePaul-Chicago Community Trust (CCT) grant project. The Science/Math Coach is to support the work of professional development and in-classroom mathematics coaching for Chicago Public Schools (CPS) at the district, network, and school levels.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide on-site coaching and support to teacher leaders in the network professional learning communities (PLC) through modeling, coaching, and mentoring activities in participating schools.
- Collaborate with the project team, network designees, and the CPS Department of Math and Science (DMS) to plan, facilitate and support PLC's of teacher leaders at the network level.
- Collaborate with the project team and the DMS to plan and execute professional development at the district level.
- Assist in the preparation of reports and evaluation materials as required by internal and external funding agencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Master's degree in mathematics or math education.
- Middle grade mathematics endorsement or high school certification.
- 5+ years experience teaching middle grade or high school mathematics.
- 3 to 5 years or more experience working in a mathematics leadership and/or coaching role.
- Experience teaching mathematics in an urban setting.
- Strong knowledge of successful teaching strategies.
- Flexible teacher leadership and communication skills, and an understanding of current issues related to the teaching and learning of mathematics and the Common Core State Standards-Math (CCSS-M).
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability in mentoring and coaching.
- Must possess initiative and the ability to carry projects forward with little supervision at times.
- Sound judgment, discretion, and a sense of diplomacy.
- Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and application integration.
- Ability to communicate well in writing, including editing, proofing, technical and creative writing.
- Ability to handle and organize many responsibilities or tasks at the same time, while paying attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively on a small team.
- Ability to work some weekends and evenings.
